Bad SamaritansWhere do I begin?… Bad Samaritans formerly known as The GRRG are one of the teams that I have personally known for quite some time now. Honestly I couldn’t be prouder of this group of paintball players, so much so, I feel like a proud father seeing this team, my friends, excel in such a big way. I recall the first time I met some of their membership, on a small parcel of bush playing some outlaw ball. I remember thinking what a real rough around the edges bunch they were….

The GRRG came out of those backwoods here in rural Ontario and began to play paintball across Ontario particularly enjoying scenario games at Base Borden and Soldiers of Fortune among other paintball venues. Team captain at the time Marc “Darth Dubie” McCarty lead the team into the competition side of scenario paintball. The team such as it was at the time entered the CSPPL series the first year of its introduction to Canada.

While the team did well competitively speaking, they also had the wisdom to fully examine where they fell short and that is exactly what they did. They learned the rulebook inside and out, developed a game plan, recruited caliber players and began a serious practice regimen that quickly catapulted them to the top of the Canadian tournament paintball scene. In 2008 The GRRG swept the Canadian tournament scene winning all the CSPPL qualifiers they participated in and going on to win the CSPPL finals that same year. As well they competed in the OASS (Ontario Action Scenario Series) and likewise fared well in that competition series.

podiumFinally this brings us to now….2009….and WOW! The Bad Samaritans gathered together 7 of their best to travel to Hell’s Survivors in Michigan to attend the SPPL Michigan qualifier held August 22nd and 23rd. This can easily be likened to a fairy tale success story in that 6 of the 7 are core members of the team. Now Team Captains Aaron Bakker and Toby Park alongside members Andrew Kabitz, Kyle Kerry, Jason Balaka and Ashton Young made the journey. With them came Matthew Firmi, one of the owners of the Soldiers of Fortune paintball field in Hamilton Ontario.

One of the teams membership, Andrew Kabitz even had a broken foot completely Picture 2wrapped in a cast, yet he still played paintball like a madman so I am told. Upon arriving at the Hells Survivors field, the team were able to top up their roster with the 3 needed players,  two players formerly of the team “Regime” from California, Mike Melgar and Mike McClosky (one of whom now plays for the “Forest Demons”) and one walk on player Ian Thompson. The Bad Samaritans competed in the Elite Division against caliber teams including The Great Lakes Rangers, Failure to Flatline and Delta Force, The Bad Samaritans proceeded to do what they do best…win!

In the semi finals The Bad Samaritans faced off against all three teams and overallwent undefeated…and swept through the final two games to remain that way and clinch their victory.

Saturday Scores

Bad Samaritans – 86          Failure To Flatline – 47

Bad Samaritans – 156  Great Lakes Rangers – 26

Bad Samaritans – 151            Delta Ops -21

As one final note to an awesome event and outcome, owner of the SPPL Jayson Neilson invited The Bad Samaritans to return to compete in the Pro Division. Only teams officially given this kind of invitation are allowed to compete at this level. CONGRATS Bad Samaritans!!!!
