fatladys2The name Fat Lady’s Charms confuses some people.  It originates from the team “Fat Lady” that used to play at a local field in Oslo, Norway.  The girls wanted to have Fat Lady in the team name to show it’s origins so therefore the team name became “Fat Lady’s Charms” meaning the fat lady’s lucky charms.  As the team Fat Lady no longer exists the girls shortened the name to FL Charms.  The first time the team played in the Millennium Series it is believed the team name spreadsheets did not have big enough columns so they appeared on the schedule as “Fat Ladies.”  It took quite some time to out live that misunderstanding.

So how did the team start you may ask?  Once upon a time there were three Norwegian girls who had this burning passion for this little sport called paintball.  With that passion they really wanted to play on a team and it so happened that these three girls met each other at a training field.  The chances of meeting other girls who loved this sport as much as they did themselves seemed to be a gift from the paintball gods so they quickly formed an all girl team in 2001.  And they lived happily ever after…Or did they?

Of course they did not.  Playing in competitive tournaments in Norway just was not enough for these ambitious young women, who soon learned of the Millennium Series that made stops on several European cities.  So the very next year, new members were recruited from all over Sweden and Denmark as well as Norway to prepare for the daunting task of playing in the Millennium Series. fat ladys1

They are the only all female team that has attended the complete season of the series since 2003.  Today the team is from “Scandianavium,” which is the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic states(Lithuania, to be exact).  In the beginning the team heard of people making bets on how long they would survive as a team.  Let’s face it, history was not on their side with many girl teams coming and going over the years.  FLC wanted to be more than just pretty faces, they wanted to be a force on the field that no longer were looked at as a girl team, but more as a fierce team that is very competitive and successful.  The team was fortunate to know a lot of pro players in Scandinavia and they helped the girls train.

All of the money, hours and sweat were well worth it in the end.  In 2005, the team could declare themselves as the unofficial world’s best female paintball team.  They have made it to Sunday in every Millennium, getting to the podium twice and taking the season overall second place in the Nordic series.  The same year two of the most renowned personalities in the game, Rich Telford and Robbo, wrote articles in Facefull and PGI that featured the ladies of FLC.
