Don first stumbled across the Oklahoma D-Day game in late 2007 and, after only a few moments reading about the world’s largest scenario paintball event, knew he had to go. He made short work of convincing his team mates on the Niagra Misfit Militia, and together they set out to decide which of the many regiments and battalions they would join. Don knew he wanted a challenge – a unique experience that would make the long journey to Oklahoma worthwhile. When the creation of a new German unit was announced on the D-Day Adventure Park website, a unit whose sole purpose was to sow as much chaos and destruction as possible on Allied forces, Don and the Misfits knew they had found their home. The unit they enlisted with was the 1058 MEK, and they were not disappointed. Don will be returning to D-Day 2010 as a veteran MEK player.
Why the MEK? According to Don, the MEK mission is what most appealed. “We’re outmanned and highly aggressive,” says Don. “Always looking for a fight”. Don admits he went into D-Day 2008 with little in the way of expectations, but walked away with the experience of a lifetime. “The friendships we made have proven to be life bonds” he says. And, of course, the level of paintball at the event is unrivaled. “The end game at Colleville will be forever ingrained in my memory” recounts Don. “Seeing 300 players fighting it out in just a few acres was something else to see… ‘awesome’ is the only word I can think of”. It is a challenge he feels the MEK helped prepare him to meet. “Through the week the MEK experiences CQB training, force on force training with other units and, of course, our beer-pong tournament, all of which helps build a great team. With the MEK you play hard, and party harder.”
Though Don had to miss 2009 (having somehow allowed the business of getting married get in the way of paintball!) he is chomping at the bit for D-Day 2010, which will see him reunited with a veteran MEK team.
