Perhaps one of the most infamous periods in history starts with June 6th, 1944 as the invasion of Normandy began and Allied troops stormed the beaches. June 6th is a day that people should stop and reflect on. June 6th has also become a day that many use to create historical re enactments so that we can always remember and perhaps teach the younger generations a thing or two about history.

June 6th, 2010, interestingly enough, mirrored that date in 1944. As the skies cleared and the rain lifted the Allied Commanders gave the order to attack. So it began last weekend as the rainy weather started the day off with many wondering if the D Day paintball game scheduled at Flagraider’s in Kitchener, ON was to go ahead and take place at all.

Take place it did as almost 700 paintball enthusiasts braved the weather to take part in one of the most exciting games of 2010. It was a pitched battle with the Allies taking a vicious pounding as the Germans held the high ground.

The German Axis Troops held the high ground for easily the first few hours until the Allies eventually gained a foot hold after which areas including the Tac Town and the Guns of Navarone overlooking the landing craft became hotly contested areas with control going back and forth for a majority of the afternoon. General Matt D Eisenhower continued a relentless assault on Field Marshal Johan and General ZeeWin Rommel’s positions.

In the words of field owner Joe Kimpson “Since “epic” is the new awesome or “sick” I would have to say without a doubt Sunday’s Phoenix Project was EPIC, just over 700 players battled, captured and completed various missions during the 22nd Phoenix Project thanks to everyone that played, worked or volunteered today“.

Further adding to the game was the appearance of “D Day Wear” as a vendor on site. Speaking with Joe, the man behind D Day Wear, all sales of the apparel and other items include a $5 donation to the Juno Beach Center raising funds to have plaques created in memory of those that fell during the battles of World War II. To date almost $36 000 has been raised and Joe will continue with this very worthy effort until every soldier has been taken care of. Ordering your own D Day wear is relatively easy and can be done online by visiting www.ddaywear.com

At the end of the day it was the Allies that won. It has been attributed to General Zeewin’s fatal mistake of retrieving ALL the precious works of art instead of just the 5 Van Gogh’s that was the mission. All 15 pieces of art were incorrectly retrieved and General Rommel and the Axis were penalized 1000 points. I cringe thinking of how Field Marshal Johan will punish him for this major error …. perhaps even run him over with the peoples car, the “Volkswagen” .

If you missed this years Phoenix Project 22 D Day game, stop paying such close attention to the weather reports and gear up! The next big game at Flagraider’s will be upon us soon enough, its going to be EPIC!
