On July 7th, and 8th at the Hornets Nest Paintball field was the Casino Royal 007 Breast Cancer Charity event. This event was organized and produced through Carla Dillon from the new all girl paintball team “Chicks With Guns” her partner Scott Hayes along with Adam “Misfit” Fowler, and reffed by the Rubber Duckies paintball team. This event turned out to be a huge success and considering all the work Carla put into getting this off the drawing board and making it a reality shows how dedicated she is to helping a good charity that means a lot to her. Congrats Carla you did great.
First off the amount of money raised for the fight against Breast Cancer turned out to be pretty impressive, $1,970 was raised and donated to the national Breast Cancer Charity. A big thank you to all the players who came out and supported this charity. All the planning in the world will never make a difference till game day when the players show up. This goes to show you that paintballers will support each other and go that extra mile to help. It is the players who decide the success or failure of any event and this event will go down in this region as a big success.
Now the best way to establish a quality event is to get awesome commanders. James Bond was played by Retired Msgt Chris DuBois from West Point Army Paintball and his XO was Daniel Alamo, better known to all us paintballers as “Barney”. To keep these two guys in check they squared off against Frank Coppola and his XO Chris Masi from Paintball Sports Inc (PSI). Now with this talent as commanders you could not lose in choosing a side to play on. Both sides started adding quality teams and individuals to their roster. The start horn has not even gone off and already the players know this is going to be a fight. Coppola had teams like the War Hounds, Low Key, and the Jersey Titans just to name a few. Dubois already recruited teams from the 518, like the Ninjas, Dirty Sweat Shirts, TrashTalk, ADK Wolf Pack and others. All these teams bump into each other all across the Northeast and are great friends so it wasn’t unusual to hear players calling out to each other across the battle lines. You would hear “Hey great shot” as players raised their guns on the way to respawn.
These are those rare games that make the sport so much fun on and off the field. The game write up provided very good missions and goals, the reffing was top notch and the paintball battles were hot and heavy just like the weather for the weekend. In one mission the right flank provided some great long balling opportunities, and then you could slide into the middle and grind it out up close and personal on the maze field. All the commanders got into the thick of it and lead their troops from the front lines. Mission goals consisted of finding pink pods with playing cards in them, also teams had to secure boxes and bring them back to their base. You needed two players to move the boxes which the game producers made sure of by filling them with some heavy stuff to keep it honest. 007 and his team soon would gather points with boxes only to see Frank coming in at the end with arm loads of pink pods. Nobody was sure how the points were adding up till the end.
Friday night started the event as players arrived and set up camp. Soon the camping area started filling up and they kept coming in. The Hornets Nest has a terrific indoor Kill House which provided pick up games well past midnight. Wandering around and visiting the teams camp sites is always a treat. More so when you make your way into the Jersey Titan’s camp site. These guys know how to travel and always pride themselves with some of the best food you will find at any paintball event. I came away from there with a large dish of baked stuffed shells and sausage & peppers, then cruised down to the Duck’s site and washed it down with some fine wine from the Misfit’s well stocked bar. After that it was bring the folding chair over to the DSS campsite and sit and listen to a great little acoustic guitar jam fest put on by Eric “Peeps” Galloway and Mattylaw which lasted a good couple of hours including some great sing along tunes. Then just wander over to the Kill House and play ball. All this gives you the reader a good idea of how well this event went and how enjoyable it turned out.
