After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian government abandoned many subsidized factories and facilities. A chemical plant located in the Caucusus was one such casualty. Years passed until this factory was purchased by the Umbrella Corporation and retrofitted with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment to become the Umbrella Caucusus Research Facility.
