On June 22, 1941, the German Army (Wehrmacht) launched a surprise attack, code-named Operation Barbarossa, on the Soviet Union. By October, the Wehrmacht had advanced to the outskirts of Moscow, the Russian capital. However, with the bitter Russian winter setting in, the advance was brought to a grinding stalemate.
