World Cup Asia 2011, officially recognized by the royal patron, her highness the Princess of Kedah, was launched with plenty of pomp and ceremony at the opening dinner held at the One Hotel on Langkawi Island, Malaysia. For the first time many of the paintball foreign journalists and photographers laid eyes on the royal family and enjoyed the speeches, dinner and entertainment provided by richly adorned youth who performed dances in traditional Malaysian style. It only makes sense to begin the first of our three part series on the site seeing I did during the recent Catshack mission to beautiful Langkawi Island in Malaysia. Catshack cameras were rolling as we touched down at the local airport and moved out to begin to take in some rather breath taking countryside. Langkawi is an island with stunning scenery and world class beaches, the heat and humidity seal the island as a tropical gem. The first full day on the island was spent relaxing from the long journey that brought us to the white sandy shores of Langkawi. The Catshack immediately set to work interacting with locals and teams coming in from around the world to participate in one of the top speedball tournaments of the year that is the WCA 2011. Ever since I was 14 years old my dream was to play professional paintball. I wanted to compete with the best, be the best and be compensated the best. I dreamed of our sport being equal to football, basketball and baseball. Although we have not reached that level yet, I still have faith that one day we will-maybe not in my time-but with the proper people involved and support of everyone, we can make this a reality. Somewhere over the past several years, our sport has lost something. Not entirely though as every once in a while we see a glimmer of it on Saturday afternoons during a struggle to make it to Sunday. There are sparks of it usually seen in the D2/D1 levels, shown with teams who have had to overcome financial burdens, school/work/family/relationship obstacles – all to keep their team together.
